SkinZen soap is handcrafted using the cold process method of soap making. During the manufacturing process of commercial soap, the naturally occurring glycerine that is created when lye and oils saponify gets extracted and replaced with detergents and chemicals. My soap is made using natural ingredients, no detergents, chemical fillers or preservatives, and retains all of the glycerin that naturally moisturizes the skin and helps it to keep it's healthy glow and feel. In my mind, natural is always better than synthetic.
The essential nature of any soap is directly related to the oils and fats within. I make my soap in small batches, carefully formulating the recipes in order to achieve the best blend possible. Coconut oil is my favorite because it has superb lathering and moisturizing properties. I typically combine it with either olive or sustainably produced palm oil to make a good and hard bar. To those, I add a variety of other oils and butters in smaller quantities, to further increase the soap's moisturizing, nourishing or antiseptic properties, depending on the result I am trying to achieve. Examples of these include apricot kernel, avocado, rice bran, almond and sunflower oils in addition to mango, cocoa and shea butters.
Adding color to the soap is where the science begins to combine with art. I use pigment powders, oxides, micas, clays and other natural colorants such as cocoa powder, activated charcoal and spirulina to just name a few. Using different color blends in each batch and applying different techniques for their addition and combination into the mold is what makes each bar of soap unique. From pours to swirls to layers, twists and plops, there is no end to the possibilities!
I devote as much attention to scenting my soap as I do to ensuring its beauty and effectiveness. It is yet another art form in the process of making soap. Fragrance is as important to soap as lather and hardness are in my opinion. A good bar of soap is one that offers skin-care qualities, but can also be experienced sensorially too. For that reason, I carefully select only the highest quality essential and fragrance oils.
Please note that handmade soap needs to be used within 1 - 2 years because of its natural oil and butter content and the absence of chemical preservatives. Although wonderfully smelling and looking, please be advised that scent and color will gradually dissipate over time.
Due to the nature of handcrafted products, refunds cannot be issued unless the item is returned (minus shipping) intact and in unused condition.
